Hospitality Management

Apply to the Hospitality Management Major at our Kigali campus. Courses start September 2, 2013.

The Hospitality Management Major is a direct response to the needs of the private sector and the courses combine classroom instruction, based on proven training models, with entrepreneurial skills. Linkages with the industry have been prioritized from the initial development phase to ensure that Akilah has strong relationships with the private sector, and that Akilah graduates will gain the technical skills to move directly into the workforce upon graduation.

Graduates for prepared for employment in operational management and leadership or professional staff positions within the hospitality industry. Possible career opportunities are hotel front office operations, guest relations management, food and beverage management, ecotourism management, and more.

Curriculum

Major courses include:

  • Introduction to Hospitality
  • Fundamentals of Customer Service
  • Food & Beverage 1, 2 and 3
  • Tour Management 1 and 2
  • Lodging 1, 2, and 3

The curriculum was developed with an experienced Advisory Council including members of the Rwandan hospitality industry and faculty from Johnson & Wales University in the United States. The American Hotel & Lodging Association donated textbooks, videos and teaching materials.

Internships

Claudette and Noella received a scholarship to intern in Hong Kong

All Akilah students are required to complete 300 hours of internship during their Diploma studies. The Akilah Career Development Office assists in identifying internship opportunities and preparing students for the transition to the workforce.

 

 

 

Entrepreneurship

The Hospitality Management Major places a strong emphasis on Entrepreneurship. Students work in groups to develop sample business plans, discuss potential implementation strategies, access to financing, marketing plans and potential challenges. These young entrepreneurs have the strong academic qualifications, technical skills demanded by the marketplace, and the business experience to start their own profit making enterprises.

Professors

Akilah recruits leaders and entrepreneurs from the private sector to serve as professors. Leaders from the Rwandan hospitality and tourism industry and recognized international experts have taught courses at Akilah.

Akilah has developed partnerships with leading training institutes such as Johnson & Wales University, the University of Central Florida, and Cornell University to recruit visiting hospitality professors.
