Current Kigali Campus

Akilah is currently located in rented facilities in the capital of Kigali (directions to Akilah). We have 3 classrooms and 7 offices with a total of 100 students. We are unable to provide housing to students in our current facility.

New Bugesera Campus

The Rwandan government has generously provided an existing school facility for the site of the new Akilah campus in Bugesera District.

Set on 90 acres of land on the edge of Lake Cyohoha, the new Akilah campus will eventually house a student body population of 1,000 young women.

Bugesera is approximately 35 minutes south of Kigali. During the 1994 genocide, this region was severely targeted by militias, and more than 80 percent of the Tutsi population was killed. Today, Bugesera has the highest rate of child-headed households in the country. The region will experience significant economic growth over the coming years with new businesses and a new international airport to be constructed, approximately 15 minutes away from Akilah’s new campus.

Design

Akilah partnered with Architecture for Humanity to design an eco-friendly campus recognizing the importance of indigenous foliage and culture, and incorporating green energy, composting toilets, permaculture and local materials. See the renovation plans.

Sustainability

Akilah also partnered with the international network Teach A Man To Fish to develop business plans for campus social enterprises, student-run businesses that generate income and ensure long-term sustainability. These enterprises will be used as a platform for enhanced learning to improve the quality of education offered. Students will work in the Akilah ecolodge, restaurant and agricultural programs to gain practical training. Once new construction is complete, 1,000 students will live and study on the Akilah campus each year. Learn more about Akilah’s plan for sustainability.
