Akilah is the first and only institute dedicated to women’s higher education in Burundi and Rwanda.  Although Burundi is the third poorest country in the world, the country has made great progress towards socio-economic development since the end of the civil war in the late ’90s.

Carmen Nibigira, a member of the Akilah Board of Directors, speaks about her passion for opening a campus in her hometown of Bujumbura, Burundi.

Classes start on the Akilah campus in the capital of Bujumbura in early January. Students select to major in either Entrepreneurship, or Hospitality Management. More than 500 students applied to enroll in the first intake at Akilah.  Learn more about the Burundi campus.
