2012 Metropolitan Safari

2012 Metropolitan SafariIn less than a month, the Akilah Institute for Women will embark on its 3rd Annual Metropolitan Safari. Akilah CEO and Co-founder Elizabeth Dearborn-Hughes, Akilah staff, and two recent graduates are eagerly preparing for visits to Tampa, Boston, New York City, and Philadelphia. This year’s Metropolitan Safari marks an especially momentous and exciting time as Akilah celebrates the commencement of its inaugural class this past August where 39 young women graduated with 100 percent job placement! The Akilah team is looking forward to recognizing this important milestone with the many generous donors that have been instrumental in our success and meeting new supporters who believe in Akilah’s model that is educating and empowering the future female leaders and entrepreneurs of East Africa.

Irene Ingabire and Francine Mugeni, the two graduates, will travel from Kigali, Rwanda to the US to meet the Akilah community and share their incredibly powerful stories of hope, perseverance, and dedication. Irene and Francine were selected from a fiercely competitive pool of qualified candidates to be a part of the Metropolitan Safari tour and they are excitedly awaiting their first trip to the US.

All proceeds from the 2012 Metropolitan Safari will support the Akilah Institute Scholarship Fund. The Scholarship Fund is what makes it possible for Akilah to provide high quality education and training to young Rwandan women. Next week, 130 young women will begin a new school year on campus in Kigali, each beginning or continuing their own personal journey to ensure a better future for their families, their communities, and—ultimately—their country. However, many of these young women lack the financial support needed. A gift of $3,000 provides a full scholarship for a young woman to attend Akilah, including her textbooks, tuition, and daily lunch. Supporters of $1,000 or more will be directly connected to an Akilah student. If you are unable to attend a Metropolitan Safari event, but would like to make a gift to the Akilah Institute Scholarship Fund, you can make your donation online at www.akilahinstitute.org/donate.

As we celebrate Akilah’s first graduation and approach the completion of our third year of successful academic operations, we hope to see you at a Metropolitan Safari event this fall!
