Communications Associate

The Communications Associate will work with the Communications team on all digital and non digital projects, including messaging, social media, campaign conceptualizing and execution, graphic design, email marketing, website and blog management, writing and more. This position is ideal for candidates with a background in International Development and Communications/Marketing, with a demonstrated interest in East Africa. This individual will be based full time in the Akilah office in Hong Kong. Please note this is a fast-paced and demanding job.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the development of communication materials and editorial products, including newsletters, brochures, and annual and impact reports
  • Edit images, graphics, and video material
  • Manage social media platforms and strengthen Akilah’s presence online across all social media platforms
  • Assist developing campaigns
  • Track, measure and report on audience engagement with website, email and social media
  • Maintain a proactive posture about current news and events in Akilah issue areas and conduct regular media monitoring to identify potential media targets and generate story ideas and/or news to share with supporters
  • Edit blog posts for executive staff to further elevate Akilah’s thought leadership and global voice
  • Day-to-day website management
  • Managing and analyzing email database
  • Integrating other online presences including social media outlets with email campaigns
  • Evaluating web trends and activities of visitors to the site to optimize the user experience and develop strategies to expand the user base (Google Analytics)
  • Design and customize branded PowerPoint and other Word suite tools and materials for variety of program staff
  • Assuring that organizational products have clear, concise content
  • General support to the Communications team

Required skills, experience and interests

  • 1 – 2 years of experience in a communications capacity/role
  • Fluency in digital technologies and full computer literacy
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of social media and an interest and curiosity about how to leverage social media platforms to scale Akilah’s e-presence
  • Graphic design background not required but creativity and an artistic eye are a must
  • Excellent verbal and personal communication skills
  • Organization and prioritization skills, attention to detail is critical
  • Ability to multi-task, manage several project simultaneously, prioritize, and meet tight deadlines
  • Commitment, interest, and knowledge in the area of women’s rights and gender equality
  • Willingness to work in an “all hands on deck” environment, and engage in a variety of tasks
  • Self-driven, results-oriented with a positive outlook
  • Must be able to provide own computer for position
