Communications Fellow

The Communications Fellowship is an opportunity to develop communications skills, support women’s higher education and empowerment in East Africa, and make an immediate and meaningful impact on Akilah’s communications strategy. The fellow will work with the Communications team on all digital and print projects, including messaging, social media, campaign conceptualizing and execution, graphic design, email marketing, website and blog management, writing and more. This position is ideal for undergraduate or graduate students with a background in International Development and Communications/Marketing, with a demonstrated interest in East Africa. We’re a small, fast-paced organization looking for someone ready to invest their time and energy into learning and gaining experience quickly; no coffee runs here!

Your skills / personal interests:

  • Fluency in digital technologies, social media, and full computer literacy with MS Word, Excel, Power Point
  • Graphic design background not required but creativity and an artistic eye are a must
  • Excellent verbal and personal communication skills
  • Organization and prioritization skills, attention to detail is critical
  • Commitment, interest, and knowledge in the area of women’s rights and gender equality
  • Willingness to work in an “all hands on deck” environment, and engage in a variety of tasks
  • Self-driven, results-oriented with a positive outlook
  • Demonstrated interest in East Africa

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the development of communication materials and editorial products, including newsletters, brochures, annual report, and website
  • Edit images, graphics, and video material
  • Strengthen Akilah’s presence online across all platforms, ensuring quality content on education and women’s empowerment is shared on social media
  • Assist developing campaigns
  • Track, measure and report on audience engagement with website, email and social media
  • Maintain a proactive posture about current news and events in Akilah issue areas and conduct regular media monitoring to identify potential media targets and generate story ideas and/or news to share with supporters
  • Edit blog posts for executive staff to further elevate Akilah’s thought leadership and global voice



  • Must be enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor, or in a Masters degree programme
  • Willing to work remotely; this six-month fellowship is open to all candidates and you may have the opportunity to develop into a full-time position with relocation support upon completion of the Fellowship if you are not currently based in Hong Kong
