The Akilah Institute for Women aims to build future generations of women leaders and professionals in East Africa through the development of a network of campuses. At Akilah, we bring together the most promising female leaders from Rwanda for an innovative three-year program
 that prepares them for professional careers and leadership roles. Akilah will graduate 1,000 students by the year 2020. In 2015, Akilah will enroll a total over 500 students on two campuses. Our hands-on and project-based curriculum is developed in partnership with the local private sector. Students start with a foundational year of English, math and leadership immersion before choosing a specialized track in Entrepreneurship (ENT), Information Systems (IS), or Hospitality Management. Students graduate with the market-relevant skills required for meaningful employment in the fastest growing sectors of the economy. 

The Position

Akilah’s second diploma program, Entrepreneurship (ENT), was launched in 2013. We are searching for an innovative and dynamic candidate for the position of Entrepreneurship Program Manager (EPM). This individual will be responsible for leading the ENT team and program overall, to include (but not limited to): curriculum design/review, program implementation, instruction, partnership building and market-relevant program content to ensure students are prepared for professional success in the East African market.

Reporting to the Academic Director, the EPM will play an integral role in providing pedagogical leadership, vision and guidance for the program. The EPM will develop and enhance curriculum leveraging a variety of sources, deliver courses and work closely with faculty members. In addition, the EPM will play a lead role in building, maintaining and growing relationships with Akilah’s current and future academic and community partners. The EPM will shape the student business model, seek and incorporate feedback from the private sector, secure relationships with local businesses for case studies, site visits, etc. and develop a pipeline for student access to capital upon graduation.

Key Responsibilities

Management of ENT Program

  • Provide strategic vision and leadership for the development of the Entrepreneurship track
  • Support professional development of ENT faculty. Work closely with the Academic Director, Director of Curriculum and Faculty Development and Country Director
  • Develop new curriculum and revise existing Entrepreneurship curriculum in partnership with the Academic Director and the Director of Curriculum and Faculty
  • Support funding of the program through meetings with donors, contributing to grant reports and hosting visitors on campus
  • Mentor and provide capacity building support to the entrepreneurship and business Instructors
  • Oversee routine administrative duties


  • Instruct entrepreneurship classes  
  • Build a network of guest lecturers
  • Support the M&E process; use results to strengthen the program

Student Engagement

  • Enhance the student run business program with teaching modules and structures that ensure a highly innovative learning environment for students
  • Develop special events, campus activities, etc. to enhance student learning

Community Liaison

  • Assist Akilah in the launching of incubation centers for student run businesses
  • Provide a visible community presence for the Akilah Entrepreneurship major
  • Seek opportunities to talk publicly about the program, such as conferences.

Other tasks

  • Work with the Admissions department on recruitment strategies for prospective students
  • Stay abreast of trends in the industry and use this to maintain curriculum relevance and increase staff knowledge for high quality student support
  • Oversee summer interns, to include: development of case studies and curriculum work




Master’s Degree preferred in a business related field


  • At least 3 years experience in business/entrepreneurship education or training
  • Demonstrated track record launching and implementing new programs
  • Experience working or conducting business in the East African market
  • Experience in business start-ups preferred


  • Ability to set strategy for a new program, lead and inspire a small team of staff and faculty
  • Ability to effectively develop and implement a workplan
  • Ability to effectively instruct entrepreneurship related courses
  • Ability to write innovative curriculum and lesson plans that incorporate evolving industry needs/landscape
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to juggle and manage multiple, competing priorities
  • An engaging and collaborative leadership style with mature interpersonal skills
  • Natural ability to effectively network and thus enrich the ENT program
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Demonstrable passion for working with young women, and commitment to Akilah’s mission
  • Flexibility to adapt to changes inherent within a vibrant and evolving organization
  • Commitment of minimum 2 years
