Sandrine1-001I finished secondary school at the end of 2009 and stayed home for two years. I was not doing very well at that time. I was constantly worrying about my life and the life of my family: as I am the first born, I would have to take care or my brothers. I did not smile much, and the only time people saw me out and about participating in my community was when I had an obligation of some kind. I had no devotion in me and I thought that all people were bad. That’s what my life had taught me up to that point.

You see, no one in my family who attended university is alive today. All of them were killed. Because of that, I had a fixed mindset about schooling. I told myself that I was not going to continue with schooling, because even if I could afford it, I would end up dying. But somebody who cared about me urged me to apply to Akilah, and I can say that I’m a different and very positive person now, and not the one I thought I was going to be.
