Last week’s Metropolitan Safari at the Mayflower in Washington, DC was a rousing success! Our speakers U.S. Ambassador for Global Women’s Issues Catherine Russell, Rwanda’s Ambassador to the U.S. Mathilde Mukantabana, Marriott executive Kathleen Matthews, and Executive Vice President at Pew Charitable Trusts Tamera Luzzatto made the night. Also in attendance was former World Bank president and Akilah supporter Robert B. Zoellick. Ninety guests raised $70,000 to support the Akilah Scholarship Fund.
Sponsored by Marriott International, the event celebrated the expansion of Akilah’s partnership with the global hotelier to provide jobs for young women in East Africa. Marriott this year has selected 24 Akilah students to join the Marriott team upon their graduation in December. They will join the 17 Akilah graduates who were hired by Marriott in 2012 to work in Marriott properties in Dubai or Doha before returning to Rwanda in 2015 to open Marriott’s first hotel in Sub-Saharan Africa.
This year’s Metropolitan Safari ambassadors, Cecile and Julian, will both be among the new Marriott hires.
