The Akilah Institute for Women aims to build future generations of women leaders and professionals in East Africa through the development of a network of campuses. At Akilah, we bring together promising female leaders from Rwanda, and East Africa, for an innovative two-year program that prepares them for professional careers and leadership roles.

Akilah students choose a specialized track in Entrepreneurship, Information Systems, or Hospitality Management. Our hands-on and practicals-based curriculum is developed in partnership with the local and global private sectors, and is focused on building the market-relevant skills demanded by the fastest growing industries of the regional economy.


The Senior Finance Consultant (SFC) will evaluate and advise the Rwanda Finance Team to ensure that all finance related activities are managed to internationally excellent standards. In collaboration with the CFO and Finance Team, s/he will advise the team on best approach to maintain and improve strong financial practices. As part of this, the SFC will play in a major role of capacity building of Campus based Finance & Operations Teams. The SFC may have the opportunity to contribute to the growth strategy around the Institute’s expansion in Rwanda and regionally. S/he must have extreme attention to detail, be adept at analysing and developing policies and procedures that reinforce best financial practice and be an effective manager & proven leader, who has the experience required for such a role.


– Build the capacity of the Finance Team, working closely with the Human Resources, CFO and CD to create professional development plans for the team.
– Review daily, weekly and monthly work processes and recommend changes that will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Rwanda Finance Team.
– Provide drafting and revision support for standardized templates that are used in the implementation of tuition and loan policies, especially those related to enforcement. Ensure consistency in messaging across the two elements: tuition and loans.
– Use the Performance Management System to assess the performance and skills gaps of the Finance Team.
– Perform regular weekly meetings with all members of the Rwanda Finance team, monitoring progress of projects and keeping team on track regarding regular financial deadlines.
– Offer frequent advice and proactive input on where Akilah can better organize its financial affairs and build the capacity of the Institution in preparation for expansion.
– Work directly with finance staff to ensure that financial manuals, systems and processes are efficient, aligned with overall organizational needs and adequately support local, regional and international operations
– Collaborate with the Country Director, Executive Director, US Director of Finance and CFO to continually evaluate and improve IT systems and processes necessary to support the growth of the organization and its financial systems
– Work to help team develop time management & prioritization skills in pursuit of ensuring the timeliness and accuracy of all financial statements
– Review daily, weekly and monthly work processes and recommend changes that will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Rwanda Finance Team.
– Perform regular weekly meetings with the Rwanda Finance team, monitoring progress of projects and keeping team on track vis-a-vis financial deadlines.

– Achievement-oriented, comfort operating in a fast-paced environment with accountability to results.
– High attention to detail and ability to effectively and efficiently manage large volumes of financial data.
– Must have advanced knowledge and experience using Microsoft Excel, Quickbooks
– The ability to research and resolve technical issues and flexibility to handle multiple projects and problems simultaneously
– Strong organizational skills to maintain appropriate files, and reports
– Excellent written and verbal communication skills in order to interact with all levels of management, employees and clients
– Must have the ability to make judgments concerning the interpretation of policies and procedures


– Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or related field from an accredited institution required. Masters Degree with relevant certification would be a competitive advantage.
– At least 7 years of relevant experience in financial accounting systems, accounting and project management. Private, public, and nonprofit backgrounds are all valued. The ideal candidate will have succeeded in a high-performing organization and be eager to apply best practices.


The position is part time, working a minimum of 20 hrs per week. The candidate would preferably be based in Rwanda, but can be based anywhere in the East African region. Must be able to travel to Rwanda on a regular basis, domestically and internationally if required, as well as able to independently secure their own travel visa. Travel fare always “economy class” and pre-approved.
