The Akilah Institute for Women aims to build future generations of women leaders and professionals in East Africa through the development of a network of campuses. At Akilah, we bring together promising female leaders from Rwanda, and East Africa, for an innovative two-year program that prepares them for professional careers and leadership roles.
Akilah students choose a specialized track in Entrepreneurship, Information Systems, or Hospitality Management. Our hands-on and practicals-based curriculum is developed in partnership with the local and global private sectors, and is focused on building the market-relevant skills demanded by the fastest growing industries of the regional economy.
Akilah is searching for an energetic candidate for the position of Teaching Fellow. Reporting to the Program Manager, the Teaching Fellow will play a critical role in the academic department with duties related to administration, co-teaching and substitute teaching. The fellow will also have access to professional development opportunities at the institute. The goal is to move the teaching fellow into an instructor position within 1-2 years, but the promotion will be based on performance of the fellow and available job opportunities.
Support academic department in administrative duties, specifically those related to teacher support and student records.
Assist in delivery of courses in partnership with instructors as requested – this could include assisting with role plays, being a part of grading panels for presentations, helping with activities, lecturing on content and more.
Assist with invigilation of weekly exams and practical training exams.
Deliver courses as a short term substitute teacher as required, done under the guidance of the Academic Director.
Organize and supervise a Writing Lab for all students.
Organize and supervise tutoring sessions for students.
Take part in the implementation and assessment of the CaMLA exam during the admissions process.
Lead or co lead an English Club at the school with Fulbright ETA.
Assisting with the planning and implementation of site visits and guest speaker visits.
Manage classroom aesthetics including, but not limited to displays of student work, posters, etc.
Supporting students in one on one or small groups on acquisition of course content and English language.
Assist with management of student behavior and discipline by establishing and enforcing Akilah rules and procedures.
Perform other duties including but not limited to counseling students with academic challenges and providing student encouragement.
Prepare required academic reports as needed.
Participate in faculty meetings, professional development opportunities.
Organize and supervise special projects.
Interest in teaching and commitment to grow individual teaching practice.
Open to and willing to work on feedback regarding teaching practice.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications especially Word, Excel, Outlook, and databases.
Demonstrated passion for working with young women, empowering them through education, an unshakable belief in their potential, and a commitment to the mission of Akilah

Bachelor’s degree in Education or field related to Akilah’s educational programs, Degree in English preferred
Advanced level of English in all 4 skill areas
Position is based in Kigali, Rwanda.
