Marie-Chantal Uwanyiligira is the World Bank’s Country Manager for Madagascar since September 1st, 2019.

A Rwandan national, she joined the Bank as an Operations Officer in 1995 in the Rwanda country office and has subsequently had extensive experience working across World Bank various departments.

Prior to her new assignment, Marie-Chantal Uwanyiligira is an Economist by training with more than 20 years of experience in the field of development. She worked across the various departments of the World Bank spanning from field to Headquarters, global practices and country management. She held different various positions including at the corporate level as chief of Staff/Deputy Chief to the World Bank Executive; at country management level leading the formulation and implementation of countries strategies and high-level country dialogue; at the sectoral level including managing a Water Sector Practice Group.

She also served as an Assistant to the President in EXC in 2010, before rejoining the African Region as Country Program Coordinator for Cape Verde/Gambia/Guinea-Bissau/Senegal.

She was also a Practice Manager for the Water Global Practice and Deputy Chief of Staff to the World Bank Group President. Her recent assignment was Head of Office for the Chief Executive of the World Bank.

Her prior Bank experience including executive positions in the private sector as well teaching assignments in as well academic Marie-Chantal Uwanyiligira holds a Master’s degree in Economics and business administration.
